Why are there different glasses for red and white wine?

Different wine glasses are designed specifically to enhance the flavor and maximize the enjoyment of each type of wine. For example, balloon glasses are used for red wine served at room temperature to allow it to breathe properly. White wine is served chilled, so the wine glass is smaller to help keep it cool. Champagne flutes are tall and thin to allow for the build up of bubbles. For the budding wine enthusiast check out the specialty varietal glasses. These glasses are made to enhance the flavor of the particular grape associated to the wine.

Why is some glassware more expensive than others?

Craftsmanship and quality vary with glassware. For example, mouth blown glassware is considered of higher quality than pressed or molded glassware.

Do I need to get the same style for all these different types of glasses?

Absolutely not. Your glassware should reflect your own personal taste. Whether uniform or varied, your glassware should create the presentation you desire. Many also choose a style that complements one's place settings.

How much glassware do I need?

For every dinnerware or flatware place setting you should have an equivalent glassware place setting. So if you have dinnerware for 12, you will want 12 of each type of glass you own. Which type of glass (water, wine, champagne flute, etc.) you purchase should be determined by your own personal style and how much entertaining you do.
