There are two types of mattress pads:
GUARANTEED-TO-FIT: Guaranteed-to-fit mattress pads will fit securely over the deepest mattress and stay secure. Guaranteed-to-fit mattress pads are designed with an elasticized skirt that grips the mattress sides to provide a secure fit. Expandable sidewalls accommodate various mattresses ranging up to depths of 24". (This item is also referred to as Tailor Fit or Expand-a-Grip.)
FITTED PAD: A fitted mattress pad covers both the top and sides of the mattress and resembles a fitted sheet with elastic on each of the corners. It will be quilted only on the top of the pad and will provide a good fit for most standard-sized mattresses.
construction
FABRIC CONTENT: 100% cotton covers will provide superior comfort and durability over cotton/polyester blends. Many mattress pads are treated with fabric protection that makes them stain - and water-repellant as well as anti-microbial.
THREAD COUNT: Represents the number of threads per square inch of fabric. A higher thread count of a better quality yarn will provide a mattress pad with greater resistance to wear and tear.
FILL: The majority of mattress pads will be filled with a polyester fill. Thicker fill provides more cushioning. Down-alternative fills, which are made of super-fine gel fibers, provide extra support and comfort.

MATTRESS PROTECTORS: Non-padded mattress covers or encasements can be made of cotton, vinyl or super-tightly woven polyester fabric. Most covers or encasements zip around the mattress to form a complete barrier. Depending on the product, some simply provide waterproof protection while others are designed to also prevent penetration of dust mites, mold, pet dander and other allergens. These items are also available for box spring covers.
VISCO ELASTIC MATTRESS PADS: Also called Memory Foam, these temperature and weight sensitive pads become softer where the body is warmer and remains firm in cooler areas. It conforms precisely to the body shape and offers firm yet flexible and conforming support.
FIBERBEDS and FEATHERBEDS: Pads filled with either feathers/down or a polyester fill can be placed underneath or on top of a fitted sheet. They are designed to cradle body areas that don't come in contact with the mattress.
CONVOLUTED MATTRESS PADS: Also referred to as Egg Crates, these high-density dimpled foam pads are designed to improve body weight distribution. They help reduce tossing and turning and add a layer of cushioning to the bed.
