The Getaway Car: Keeping It Safe and Fun!

The getaway car can be a source of humor or horror for the newly married couple and their guests. The custom of tying shoes to the car bumper stems way back to Ancient Egypt, where a father would give the groom his daughter’s sandal, marking that an exchange had taken place. In Anglo-Saxon marriages, the groom tapped the bride on the head with the shoe to demonstrate his authority. Since feet were considered a phallic symbol, guests threw old shoes at the bride to promote fertility. Eventually, shoes and cans were tied to the departing automobile. Fast-forward to today and the getaway car has seen it all! Silly string, shaving cream, streamers, and flags. It’s a proud shout-out to passersby - they’re "just married" and they’re absolutely thrilled!

But are they thrilled?

This seemingly harmless and fun tradition can be the cause of stress and unforeseen angst for the newlywed couple. Traffic violations, permanent car damage, fines, and even accidents could put a serious damper on the happiest of occasions. Before you grab that can of shaving cream, take note:

Speak with the couple beforehand.
Be considerate of your friends’ wishes. It’s their day - don’t do anything to spoil it.

Inquire about rentals.
If they plan to exit from a rental car, check with the company about possible restrictions, like tying things to the bumper. You wouldn’t want your newly married buddy to get slapped with a fine.

Invite others to help out.
Think of others who might want to share in the fun.

Surprise them with thoughtfulness.
Toss in some drinks and snacks. They’ll probably be starving! If they have a driver, include some champagne as a special touch.

Keep it short.
Make sure streamers don’t get stuck in the wheels.

Shop around.
Complete car-decorating kits are the ultimate time-saver. Glass or window chalk is cheap and easy to clean. Vinyl "window clings" stick and peel off, and come with pre-written wedding messages.

Be safe.
Don’t do anything that will obstruct the driver’s view, get a ticket or worse, cause an accident.

Get in the car after decorating.
Check for visibility and falling debris.

Don’t damage the car’s finish.
Avoid using shaving or whipped cream on the body of the car - they eat away at the paint and may leave a permanent message. Also avoid glue, cellophane tape and electrical tape, since these tear the finish.

Don’t tie cans to the bumper.
It may be a tradition, but it’s illegal in some areas.
|
|
|
|
Don’t obscure the license plate.
|
|
|
|
Help clean up, if possible.
Unless they are going on a honeymoon road trip, the vehicle will stay behind. If it’s a rental, note the time it’s due back. The happy couple shouldn’t have to incur a late-fee because extra time is needed to clean up.
